Getting In and Around Japan

Getting to Japan

The fastest way to get to Japan from Nigeria is via a connecting flight, as there are currently no direct routes. The most popular connections are through the Middle East, with Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad all operating flights to Tokyo and Osaka. Flying time with a connection is typically between 16 and 20 hours depending on your layover.

Getting a visa to Japan

Nigeria does not have a visa-free arrangement with Japan, so you will need to apply for a tourist visa before your trip. I have a detailed guide on how to apply for a Japanese tourist visa from both Kenya and Nigeria, covering the required documents, fees, and processing times. You can read it here.

Best time to visit Japan

apan is an all-year-round travel destination, but each season offers a very different experience. Generally, spring (March to May) is one of the most popular times to visit, thanks to the famous cherry blossoms, while autumn (September to November) draws visitors with its stunning fall foliage.

Summer can be hot and humid, and July and August also fall within typhoon season. Winter is cold but rewarding, especially if you're hoping to see snow.

Getting around in Japan

Getting around Japan is generally straightforward. The country has an excellent public transport system, and the Shinkansen (bullet train) makes travelling between cities fast and efficient. Highway buses are a more budget-friendly alternative for intercity travel. Within cities, local trains and subways will take you almost everywhere you need to go.

Renting a car is worth considering if you plan to explore more rural or remote areas, where public transport can be limited.
