Best Time to Visit Victoria Falls: Month-by-Month Guide

Victoria Falls (Mosi-oa-Tunya, or “The Smoke That Thunders”) is a completely different experience depending on when you visit. Come in April, and you’ll see the falls at their most powerful – a wall of water stretching more than 1.5 kilometres across, with spray rising hundreds of metres into the sky and a roar you’ll hear before you even see the falls.

Visit in October, and the landscape transforms. The water recedes, revealing the gorge in all its dramatic glory, and you can even take a dip in a natural rock pool right at the edge of the precipice. So, when is the best time to visit Victoria Falls?

Zambia side Victoria Falls

That depends on what you want from your trip. Whether you’re after the thundering spectacle of peak water levels or the heart-pounding experiences that become possible during the dry season, timing makes all the difference. Neither is better. They are just different trips. This guide breaks down every month of the year so you can pick the version of Victoria Falls that matches the trip you actually want, whether that is drama, photos, adrenaline, or a bit of everything.

I have been in the high water season, soaked to the skin on the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides and grinning the whole time. Everything below is what I wish I had known before booking.

Quick Answer: The Best Time to Visit Victoria Falls

  • Best overall: May to July. Strong flow, improving visibility, dry weather and cooler days. I went at the end of April and beginning of May and it was such a perfect time to visit!
  • Best for the falls at full power: March to April. Peak flow, maximum spray, rainbows everywhere.
  • Best for photos and clear views: August to September. The curtain of water is still wide, but the mist no longer hides it.
  • Best for Devil’s Pool and rafting: September to November. Lowest water, calmest pool, best rapids.
  • Best for fewer crowds and lower prices: January to February and December, the green season.

Opening and closing dates vary each year depending on the rains, so treat the Devil’s Pool column as a rough guide rather than a guarantee. When I visited, Angel’s Pool was open for the first few days of May before closing shortly after. Victoria Falls water Levels Explained

Victoria Falls runs on the Zambezi River, and the Zambezi runs on rain that falls far upstream in Angola and northern Zambia. That water takes months to reach the falls, which is why peak flow arrives in March and April, after the local rains have mostly ended.

The year splits into three phases:

  1. High water (February to May): The falls are at full force. Spray soaks every viewpoint and can hide parts of the falls completely. Devil’s Pool and most rafting are closed.
  2. Falling water (June to August): Still powerful, but the mist thins. This is the sweet spot for seeing the full width of the falls clearly. But it is also one of the busiest times to visit.
  3. Low water (September to January): The flow concentrates into fewer channels and the basalt cliffs appear. Devil’s Pool opens, rafting is at its best, and the Zambian side can run almost dry by October and November.

One thing to know: Victoria Falls never “dries up.” Even at its lowest, water still pours over the main sections on the Zimbabwe side. It just looks more like a series of waterfalls than one giant curtain.

Month-by-month Guide to Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls in January

January is the green season. The water is rising after the low months, the bush is lush, and afternoon storms roll in most days. Crowds thin out after the holidays and lodges often drop their rates. If you arrive early in the month, you may still catch Devil’s Pool before it closes for the season. Rafting is still running.

Go if: you want lower prices, green landscapes and a good balance of flow and visibility. Skip if: you hate heat, humidity and getting rained on.

Victoria Falls in February

The Zambezi is climbing fast now. The falls look fuller every week, and the spray starts building. Devil’s Pool is closed, and rafting usually winds down as the river gets too powerful.

Go if: you want to see the falls gaining strength without peak-season crowds. Skip if: Devil’s Pool or rafting is the main reason for your trip.

The Smoke that Thunders Mosi-oa-Tunya Zambia

Victoria Falls in March

March is when Victoria Falls starts to earn its local name, Mosi-oa-Tunya, “the smoke that thunders.” The spray cloud is visible from kilometres away and the rains are easing off. You will get wet on the trails. Some viewpoints, especially on the Zambian side, disappear into white mist.

Go if: raw power is what you came for. Skip if: you want clean photos of the full face of the falls.

Victoria Falls in April

April is usually peak flow. This is the falls at maximum volume, louder and wetter than any other month. Rainbows appear constantly in the spray, and around the full moon you can see a lunar rainbow on evening tours. The Knife Edge Bridge on the Zambian side feels like walking through a rainstorm. Bring a raincoat or rent one at the entrance, and put your phone in a waterproof pouch.

Go if: you want the most dramatic version of Victoria Falls that exists. Skip if: visibility matters more to you than volume.

Victoria Falls in May

May is still high water, but the spray starts to settle. Days are dry and pleasant, the landscape is still green from the rains, and the falls are thundering. This is a strong month for a first visit. You get the power and a much better chance of actually seeing it.

Go if: you want big water, good weather and the lunar rainbow before the season ends. Skip if: you are set on Devil’s Pool.

Victoria Falls in June

Water levels begin to drop and the views open up. Mornings and evenings are cool, so pack a jacket for sunrise and sunset cruises. Livingstone Island tours often restart around now, depending on the water. June is also the start of the dry season safari months in nearby parks like Chobe and Hwange, so it pairs well with a wildlife trip.

Go if: you want a balanced trip with comfortable weather. Skip if: you want hot days by the pool.

Victoria Falls in July

July is one of the best all-round months. The falls are still wide and full, the mist is lighter, and the skies are clear. Low water rafting usually restarts on a shorter run, and Angel’s Pool on Livingstone Island may open before Devil’s Pool. It is also a busy month for international travellers on summer holidays, so book activities ahead.

Go if: you want strong flow, clear views and the widest choice of activities. Skip if: you want to avoid peak tourist traffic.

Victoria Falls in August

August is a photographer’s month. The water is still flowing across much of the cliff face, but the spray no longer hides it. Helicopter flights over the falls, the “Flight of Angels,” give their clearest views around now.

Devil’s Pool usually reopens from mid-August once the river drops to a safe level.

Go if: you want the best photos and a shot at Devil’s Pool late in the month. Skip if: you are travelling early in August and Devil’s Pool is non-negotiable.

Radisson Blu Mosi-oa-Tunya Resort Livingstone Infinity Pool

Victoria Falls in September

September is low water season in full swing. Devil’s Pool is open, rafting is excellent, and the weather is warm and dry. The rock structure of the gorge becomes visible, and the falls look like a series of separate cascades. It is one of the most popular months for adventure travellers, so Devil’s Pool slots sell out. Book early.

Go if: you want Devil’s Pool, rafting and clear skies in one trip. Skip if: you want the classic full-curtain waterfall.

Victoria Falls in October

October is the hottest and lowest month, and parts of the Zambian side can be almost dry. That sounds disappointing, but it reveals the full depth of the gorge and makes the Zimbabwe side the star. Devil’s Pool conditions are close to ideal, with a calmer current, and the Zambezi rapids are at their best for rafting. It gets very hot, so plan activities for early morning and late afternoon.

Go if: adrenaline and adventure are the priority. Skip if: you are visiting the Zambian side only.

Victoria Falls in November

November usually has the lowest water of the year, and the first rains arrive towards the end of the month. Devil’s Pool is still open and calm. The heat breaks a little once the storms start. If you visit now, spend most of your falls time on the Zimbabwe side and save the Zambian side for Livingstone Island and Devil’s Pool.

Go if: you want Devil’s Pool with fewer people than September. Skip if: you want to see the falls at anything close to full size.

Victoria Falls in December

The rains are back and the water starts rising again. The landscape turns green fast, and the falls begin to fill out. Devil’s Pool is usually still open for most of the month and often closes around late December or January. December holidays bring regional visitors, so lodges in Livingstone and Victoria Falls town fill up around Christmas.

Go if: you want Devil’s Pool and a greener, fuller waterfall in the same trip. Skip if: you need guaranteed dry weather.

Zambia or Zimbabwe: Which Side, and When?

The falls sit on the border, and your timing should decide where you spend most of your time.

SeasonZambia side (Livingstone)Zimbabwe side (Victoria Falls town)
High water (Feb to May)Up close and drenched; Knife Edge Bridge is unforgettable but views are often lost in sprayBest place to actually see the falls; most of the face is in view
Falling water (Jun to Aug)Very good; island tours restartExcellent; the classic postcard views
Low water (Sep to Jan)Parts run dry, but this is where Devil’s Pool and Livingstone Island areStill flowing over the Main Falls; the best views of the year

But the best part? You don’t have to choose! I recommend visiting both sides. Zimbabwe is where you get those sweeping views of Victoria Falls, while Zambia is where you’ll find more of the up-close experiences.

If you’re eligible for the KAZA UniVisa, I’d recommend getting it, as it makes crossing between the two countries much easier. For Nigerians, obtaining separate visas for both countries is also currently a straightforward process. I’ve covered the details, including how to get a Botswana visa, in this article.

Chobe River Safari Cruise

And if you fancy a little walk between the two sides, you can cross the Victoria Falls Bridge on foot between the border posts.

When I Visited, and What I Would Choose Next Time

I visited Victoria Falls during high-water season, in the last week of April and the first week of May, and honestly, I couldn’t have asked for better weather. Livingstone was cool and dry, while the falls were still at their peak, putting on an absolutely spectacular show.

Yes, there were sections where the mist and spray were so intense that visibility was practically nonexistent. I couldn’t even cross the Knife Edge Bridge on the Zambian side because the spray was just too much! I got absolutely soaked, but oh, how I loved every minute of it!

Knife Edge Bridge High Water Season

One misconception I had was that all the viewpoints would be hidden behind mist and spray. Nothing could be further from the truth. There were plenty of viewpoints on both the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides where I had excellent views of the falls, got to enjoy the spray, and had near-perfect weather. It really was the best of both worlds.

One thing I wish I’d known beforehand was the lunar rainbow, also known as a moonbow. I was actually there during this natural phenomenon but had no idea it was happening! I was staying at The Royal Livingstone, which gave me unlimited complimentary access to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, so I could easily have gone to see it from the Zambian side. Imagine being that close and missing out simply because you didn’t know! Anyway, we live and we learn.

As for Devil’s Pool and Angel’s Pool, neither was a major deciding factor in when I chose to visit. But if I ever return, I’d love to time my trip around their opening dates and give one of them a go. Am I terrified? Absolutely. Will I probably talk myself into it anyway? Also, absolutely.

Planning your Trip from Nigeria…

Timing is only half of it. If you are travelling on a Nigerian passport, sort these before you lock in dates.

  • Visas: See my detailed post here but be sure to check official sites for up-to-date information.
  • KAZA UniVisa: At US$50, it covers both Zambia and Zimbabwe for up to 30 days, plus day trips into Botswana through Kazungula. Eligibility depends on nationality, so confirm yours first.
  • Getting there: There are no direct flights from Lagos or Abuja. Most routes connect through Johannesburg, Addis Ababa or Nairobi into Livingstone (Zambia) or Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) airports.
  • Health: Carry your yellow fever card, and speak to a doctor about malaria prevention, especially for the rainy months.
  • Money: US dollars are widely used for activities on both sides. Bring clean, newer notes in small denominations. Cards are also widely accepted. ATMs are available too.
  • Book early for peak months: Devil’s Pool in September and October, and lodges in July, August and December, fill up fast.
