I don’t know how many places in the world let you combine a safari and beach holiday this effortlessly, but I feel incredibly lucky to call one of them home. In Kenya, you can watch elephants wander across endless golden plains in the morning and, not long after, find yourself on the shores of the Indian Ocean with your feet in warm sand.
You can take a train from Nairobi and, in about four hours, arrive in the heart of Kenya’s wild landscapes, then continue your journey towards the coast in just a couple more hours, or drive south and watch the scenery transform along the way.
Few things capture the magic of Kenya quite like that contrast – untamed wilderness on one end, turquoise waters on the other, and an entire world of adventure in between. A safari and beach holiday here isn’t just possible. It feels almost effortless, and in this post, I will share everything you need to know to plan the perfect 5-day safari and beach holiday!
My Safari and Beach Holiday in Kenya
I’ve now done this trip two years in a row, and I’m hoping it becomes a yearly tradition. I’ve also experienced it in almost every way: solo, with a friend, on a budget, and in some rather lovely high-end accommodations. One year, I spent time in the park; another, I skipped the park entirely and enjoyed game drives from a conservancy instead.
And somehow, every version has been wonderful. That’s what I love about a safari and beach holiday in Kenya. There isn’t one right way to do it. You can make it as adventurous or as indulgent as you like, slow it down, splurge a little, or keep things beautifully simple.
In this guide, I’ll take you through everything you need to plan your own trip, including how to travel by train, how I’d structure each day, where to stay in Tsavo and Diani, and, perhaps most importantly, why you might want to do the whole journey backwards.
Why a Safari and Beach Holiday Works So Well in Kenya
Geography does most of the work. Tsavo is ideally positioned between Nairobi and Kenya’s coast, making it a natural stop on a safari and beach itinerary. The contrast is the real pleasure of the journey. You spend two days in red dust and dry acacia, watching elephants coated in the colour of the earth, and two days later you are barefoot on white sand with a fresh coconut. Five days is enough time to experience both without feeling rushed, and the beauty is that getting from one to the other is part of the adventure.
So, before we get into where to stay and what to do, let’s start with the practical bit – how to get there and why the train is one of my favourite ways to make this journey.
Travelling by Train: The Madaraka Express
This is the part of the safari and beach holiday people ask me about most, so let us take it slowly.
The SGR (Madaraka Express) leaves from Nairobi Terminus in Syokimau. There are three departures a day in each direction, and all three stop at Voi.
- 08:00 Inter-County train: calls at every station, reaches Voi around midday and Mombasa at 14:00. This is the one I recommend for the safari leg.
- 15:00 Afternoon Express: reaches Voi in the early evening and Mombasa at 20:30.
- 22:00 Night Express: arrives at about 03:55 the next morning.
The line runs straight through Tsavo, which means the journey is already part of the safari. I have spotted elephants, giraffes, and zebras from the window more than once. If you decide to take the train, book first or premium class if you can; the extra space is worth it, though economy is comfortable for shorter journeys.
A few practical notes. Book through the Kenya Railways website or the official app, and book early for weekends and public holidays because the train does sell out. The name on your ticket must match your ID or passport.

For the second leg, you board at Voi and continue to Mombasa Terminus at Miritini. From there, it is roughly an hour by road to Diani on the Mombasa Southern Bypass Highway. The Likoni ferry queue that everyone used to complain about is no longer part of the journey, making the coast much easier to reach. Arrange your transfer in advance with your hotel or a shuttle company rather than hunting for one at the station. Uber also works well here.
And now for your 5-day safari and beach holiday itinerary….
Days 1 and 2: The Safari
Take the morning train and arrive at Voi around lunchtime. Most lodges are some distance from the train station, so I recommend arranging a pickup with your lodge in advance. If the transfer isn’t complimentary, it’s worth paying for the convenience. Settle in, have lunch, and head out for an afternoon game drive that runs into sundowners. Then an early night, and a morning drive the next day when the park is at its best.
Tsavo East National Park is the classic choice from Voi. It is enormous, uncrowded, and famous for its red elephants and the Galana River. But there are other smaller conservancies in the area where game drives are just as exciting.
Where to Stay for the Safari Half
The Hildana Lodge is a luxurious option, set in a private sanctuary at the foot of the Taita Hills, right in the elephant corridor between Tsavo East and Tsavo West. It has its own waterhole, two game drives a day, sundowners, and all meals included. When I stayed here, I never needed to enter Tsavo at all. The game viewing inside the conservancy was more than enough, and I spent much of the stay watching wildlife come and go from the lodge itself. It ended up being more restful than the beach half of that trip.
On my second safari and beach holiday, I chose to stay at a rustic self-catering lodge near Voi station, and I loved it just as much for different reasons. Tsavo House is simpler, considerably cheaper, and an easy base for game drives into Tsavo East.
Neither is better. They are two different holidays, and the choice comes down to preference, budget, and travel style.
Of course, there are several other places to stay in the area, from simple, budget-friendly camps to beautiful luxury lodges. I have my sights set on Salt Lick Safari Lodge next, and perhaps Soroi Lions Bluff Lodge too, if a juicy residents’ discount ever comes my way! I’ll definitely share those experiences here whenever I get the chance to stay at them.
Days 3 to 5: Diani Beach
Take the first train out of Voi at midday, transfer through the bypass, and you can be on a sun lounger by late afternoon.
Diani is a proper beach – soft white sand, warm shallow water, palms, and tuk-tuks rattling up and down the main road. Two full days are enough to do very little, which is rather the point.
If you want to get moving, a dhow trip, a snorkel at Kisite Marine Park, a morning at Bora Bora Wildlife Park, or an hour with the colobus monkeys will fill the time nicely. Nomad remains my favourite spot for lunch by the ocean.
Where to Stay in Diani
I have stayed in plenty of places here. These three are the ones I keep recommending.
Swahili Beach Resort is the big, beautiful five-star option, with Swahili and Arab inspired architecture, cascading pools, and direct beach access. Good if you want everything on site.
Furaha House by Eden Escapes is a one-bedroom villa with a pool, a few minutes’ walk from the beach. The one I would pick for a couple, or a solo trip where you want somewhere lovely to yourself.
Solani Villa is a four-bedroom, Kenyan-owned villa near Ukunda Airstrip, with a courtyard pool, a rooftop made for sundowners, and the option of an in-house chef. This is your group or family booking, and arrange the chef in advance if you can.
Doing the Trip in Reverse
You can absolutely flip this safari and beach holiday and start at the coast. Take the train down to Mombasa on day one, spend two or three nights in Diani, then head back up to Voi for the safari before continuing to Nairobi.
If you do it this way, spend the money on a lodge with its own conservancy and waterhole. Ending on a quiet, all-inclusive lodge where the wildlife comes to you is a far softer landing than ending on a busy beach, and it makes the last two days feel like a holiday rather than a schedule.
A Few Things I Would Tell a First Timer
- Confirm your Voi pickup in writing. Phone signal at the station is not always reliable.
- Neutral colours for the bush, and something warm for the morning drive. It can get chilly before sunrise.
- June to October and January to March are generally the driest months for both halves of the trip, so they are a great choice if you want the best chance of dry weather. But I wouldn’t fixate too much on travelling during these periods. Tsavo and Diani are year-round destinations, and there is a lot to be said for visiting in the off-peak months.
- You can often find significantly better accommodation rates, fewer people at popular spots, and a much quieter, more relaxed experience. In Tsavo, fewer vehicles around a sighting can make game drives feel far more intimate, while in Diani, having stretches of beautiful beach that feel almost entirely your own is hard to beat. If you’re flexible with your dates, travelling outside the busiest seasons can give you more for your money and, in some ways, a more memorable trip.

Is 5 days enough for a Kenya safari and beach holiday?
Yes, comfortably, as long as you stick to two destinations. Two nights on safari and two or three nights at the coast give you a full experience of each without feeling rushed. Adding a third park is what turns this into a tiring trip.
Can you really do a Kenya safari and beach holiday by train?
You can, and it is my preferred way to travel. The Madaraka Express connects Nairobi, Voi, and Mombasa, with three departures a day, and the only road transfers you need are from Voi station to your lodge and from Mombasa Terminus to Diani.
How much does it cost to enter Tsavo East National Park?
Adults pay KES 1,000 as East African citizens, KES 1,350 as Kenyan residents, USD 40 as African citizens, and USD 80 as non-residents, per 24 hours. Children and students pay roughly half through the eCitizen platform. Always check the official sites for up-to-date prices.
Do you still have to use the Likoni Ferry to reach Diani?
No. The Mombasa Southern Bypass Highway connects the Mombasa Terminus area directly to the South Coast, so most transfers to Diani now take between 45 minutes and just over an hour, with no ferry crossing.
Should I stay inside Tsavo or in a private conservancy?
For big park landscapes and the classic Tsavo East experience, stay near Voi and go into the park. For privacy, fewer vehicles, and wildlife that comes to you, book a lodge with its own conservancy and waterhole. A conservancy stay can make park entry optional altogether.
When is the best time for a safari and beach holiday in Kenya?
The dry months of June to October and January to March suit both halves of the trip. Wildlife tends to gather around water during the dry season, the roads in Tsavo are easier to navigate, and the coast is generally at its sunniest.
